Shamefully for a movie buff it has taken 3 years plus to watch this highly rated Oscar winner.

But the hype all seemed a little too American, and the suggestion of the core of the story being a homosexual awakening makes it a little hard to prioiritise over other films, let alone find the right time/audience.

So queue a Friday night with Jenn when Etta mercifully went to sleep early through teething pain, mix in steak, wine and few preconceptions and you've got the perfect combination.

Moonlight - Kids

Although a great example of when the hype fit, also another example of it being unnecessary, possibly killing off the natural enjoyment of a beautiful film.

Telling the story of a lonely kid growing up in tough neighbourhoods in Miami, finding role models and friends wherever he can, it makes tough watching for anyone, let alone a new parent.

The kids are excellent actors, but it's hard to watch the senseless bullying of those slightly different that is part of most childhoods in one shape or form.

The story flows through three time periods in the life of Chiron (aka "Little" and "Black"), with different actors for all parts seamlessly fitting together.

Moonlight - Swimming
Moonlight - Beach

Strong cameos from Mahershala Ali and Janelle Monae back up excellent performances from the 3 incarnations of the 2 main characters.

All based in and around Miami, making this film familiar but still uncomfortable.

Moonlight - Black

The movie is really well made to effortlessly create real emotions for the characters, least of all to show sides to them that make you feel when you wouldn't necessarily expect to.

It was an unexpected treat in a time when Hollywood and American hype can be so predictable.
